Austin Day Trip

Our friend, Alex, came to visit us in Dallas last fall, and we decided to take a day trip to Austin. It was the first time visiting for all 3 of us, so we had a packed agenda. Read on to see how we spent our day:

We arrived right around lunch time so our first mission: FOOD.

We stopped at Micklethwait Barbecue, and it was so delicious. They had a nice (and shady) outdoor area to sit and eat, the food was incredible, and the frozen cocktails were the perfect touch with the Texas heat.

After lunch we made a quick pit stop at the Texas State Capitol before heading over to South Congress Ave (SoCo) for some shopping and sightseeing. This iconic street is known for its quirky shops, boutiques, and street art.

SoCo Highlights:
Allens Boots
Maufrais Hats
Noah Marion
Society by Jackson Vaughn
Triple Z Threads
Greetings from Austin Mural (1720 S. First St.)
Magick Matcha (didn’t get to try this one but it looked so cute! need to go back!)

In the late afternoon we headed to Las Perlas for some mezcal margaritas and tacos. Definitely recommend checking this place out – it was the perfect place to relax and have a few drinks.

Once the sun started setting, we made our way to the Congress Bridge to see the bats. Yes…bats. From roughly March to October you can watch the bats emerge from underneath the bridge each night. This can definitely be hit or miss, but we wanted to give it a go. It took a while for them to emerge, but it was pretty wild when they finally made their appearance. Photos and videos truly couldn’t capture the experience, so you’ll just have to go check it out for yourself!

It was around 9pm when we headed back to Dallas, and although we were absolutely exhausted, it was a really fun day exploring the city! I’d love to visit again – it seems like there’s so much to do and it’s only a 3 hour drive from Dallas! If you have any Austin recommendations, drop them in the comments!
